The Benefits of Staying in Texas RV Parks vs. Hotels

The Benefits of East Texas RV Parks vs. Hotels

When it comes to travel accommodations, many people automatically turn to hotels. While hotels can sometimes be the right choice, the Mill Creek Ranch Resort team put together this informative blog post on the perks of our East Texas RV parks. There are many Canton accommodation options at Mill Creek Ranch Resort besides hotel rooms, such as our award-winning East Texas RV parks and cottage rentals. At Mill Creek Ranch Resort RV sites, we offer plush amenities, such as full hook-ups for water, sewer, electric, WiFi internet, a camp store with grocery items, extra clean showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities.

In a cramped hotel room, it’s a lot harder to have that much-needed break from your surroundings. Introverts will especially understand this, but even the biggest extrovert needs their alone time.
  4. A stressful part of traveling is packing. First, you have to figure out what you need, and then you need to find a way to stuff it into the limited space of your suitcase. When staying in one of the fabulous East Texas RV parks, you can reasonably bring as many comforts from home as you want! From bikes to paddle boards and other equipment you would otherwise have to rent if you stayed in a hotel.

We strive to stand out from other East Texas resorts and offer guests many luxurious amenities and opportunities for adventure. A great way to spend your East Texas vacation is to take a day trip to the lake.

What To Bring to the East Texas Lakes

  1. Rain or shine, pack sun protection for a day outdoors. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends your sunscreen should be at least SPF 30, broadspectrum, and water resistant. Some sun protection people often overlook when packing is sun protection lip balm, a wide-brimmed hat, UPF clothing, and 100% UV protection sunglasses.
  2. Don’t forget to pack an insulated cooler filled with drinks and snacks. A fun day at the lake can work up a mighty appetite and thirst. For guests that are 21+, alcoholic beverages can be a fun addition to pack, but make sure you prioritize safety. Just like you wouldn’t drive a car while intoxicated, don’t navigate a boat.
  3. Packing towels and a dry change of clothes is a great idea. Even if you’re not planning on swimming, there’s always a chance you could get wet. If that happens, you’ll be glad that you came prepared.

How To Spend a Day on the Lake in East Texas

Fishing is always a great time, especially when you are close to the East Texas trophy bass fishing lake. Located just 30 miles away from Mill Creek Ranch Resort is the legendary Lake Fork. Maybe you’ll get lucky and set another Texas state record? Lake Fork holds 15 out of the top 20 Texas state records for largemouth bass. You can also enjoy a day of sailing when you get a boat rental from Ricky’s Boat Rentals

If you don’t want to make the journey to Lake Fork, you can fish at one of the eight ponds at Mill Creek Ranch Resort. We’ll even supply the poles and bait. Perhaps you can even beat the 9.5 lb. record for fish caught here from either the dock or a paddle boat.

Best appliances for Camper life

Best appliances for your RV or Tiny House when stopping at a Canton Trade Days RV Park

Canton Trade Days RV ParkWhen headed to a Canton Trade Days RV park, your camper is quite literally your home away from home. For the most part, you’d probably like to be able to do most of the things in your home-away, even if it is in a somewhat reduced fashion.

In other words, you will need some small kitchen appliances for your RV or tiny house but space is, of course, limited. While a lot of these decisions boil down to personal preference, here are a few considerations. What should you bring and what should you leave behind??

Microwave or toaster oven? Most RV’s and tiny homes alike have some kind of oven/stove installed in them. This means you can leave your toaster oven at home (unless of course, you have no oven/stovetop). Microwaves are a different story. If you have a penchant for popcorn, best make some room. Otherwise, reheat everything in the oven and call it a day. Do keep in mind the gross majority of RV ovens and stovetops use propane.

Egg steamer. Wait, what? If you’re really not into elaborate cooking and don’t want to mess with a bunch of pots and pans but do like eggs in the morning, consider an egg steamer. They are extremely tiny, inexpensive and can hard, medium or soft boil your eggs lickety-split. Many of them also come with extra trays for poached or scrambled eggs. You don’t have to use a pot, pan, the stove or its propane.

Multi-tasking blender. Blenders are so versatile these days, aren’t they? A Ninja operates as a blender, shake maker and all-around food processor. The worst part is keeping all the parts together.

Dishwasher: yay or nay? Some people just HATE washing dishes. If this is you, consider a countertop dishwasher.

What about the Instant Pot? If your question is the Instant Pot, the answer is yes. It is just too versatile to leave behind. An instant pot is especially useful if you do not have a cooking range in your RV.

Coffee pot or an electric kettle? Pour-over coffee is not only popular these days, it’s super easy. This makes the electric kettle much more versatile (and typically smaller!) than a coffee pot. It also reduces your reliance on propane to boil water on your RV stove.

Do keep power in mind when using your road-friendly appliances and remember to not use everything all at once!

Looking for a great Canton Trade Days RV Park? Come by Mill Creek Ranch Resort! In addition to full hookups, we have resort-style amenities and activities for the whole family. For more information and availability about booking a stay at our Canton Trade Days RV Park, call Mill Creek Ranch Resort today at 877-927-3439.

weekend getaway in tx

Packing List for Weekend Getaways in Texas

weekend getaway in txYou’ll only be gone for two to three days. Packing should be a breeze, but no matter how careful you are, it always seems there’s something missing when you get to your vacation destination. Here are a few ideas to help you create a complete packing checklist.

Clothes

Simple enough, until you forget to pack underwear and have to wear the same pair for the next few days. Here’s a list of things you may need:

  • Socks (2-3 pairs)
  • Underwear (2-3 pairs)
  • Shoes (if you plan on wearing different pairs)
  • Shirts (2-3)
  • Pants/shorts (2-3)
  • Dresses (optional)
  • Coats (if it’s cold)
  • Hats (particularly handy during the summer)
  • Sunglasses

Toiletries

Try to consider your daily routine to help you remember everything you’ll need. You may also want to get travel size items for easier packing.

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Floss
  • Shower supplies (soap, loofa, shampoo, conditioner, towel)
  • Deodorant
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Hairbrush
  • Hair ties (for longer hair)
  • Hair dryer or curler
  • Makeup (foundation, blush, mascara, eyeliner, etc.)

Electronics

While you probably don’t want to pack too heavily on the electronics side, there may be some things you just can’t live without.

  • Cell phone & charger
  • Camera & charger/batteries & film (or clear off your camera’s memory)
  • Laptop computer & charger
  • iPod or other music device & charger
  • Tablet or reader & charger

Check the Weather

Nothing ruins a weekend more than unexpected bad weather. And since it will also affect the kinds of activities you can participate in, it can help you plan what you’ll do over your weekend away. Based on the weather, you may need:

  • Sunscreen, hat, and water (hot and sunny)
  • Umbrella or raincoat and rain boots (rainy)
  • Coat, scarf, hat, gloves (cold)
  • Insect repellent

Consider Your Destination

Where you’re going matters. Check out the amenities where you’ll be staying, and scope out any attractions or events in the town you’ll be visiting to make sure your packing checklist is complete. Here are some items specific to your destination and activities:

  • Swimsuit and towel (for hot tubs, pools, and other water activities)
  • Waterproof bags (for boating trips or other water-based activities)
  • Various bags (backpack for hiking, tote bag for the beach, etc.)

Miscellaneous items

No matter where you go, you’ll need an ID, as well as money or some means of paying for things.

Resealable plastic baggies are great for carrying things, keeping snacks and toiletries from busting and coating your belongings with unwanted messes. It’s good to keep a handful of these little lifesavers with you.

You may want to have gum or mints on hand for a quick breath freshener.

If you need to carry medication, always keep it on you (for safety and ease of access), and set it up so it’s easy to carry and keep track of, like using a medication day planner.

Luxury RV Parks Texas

Amenities And Other Features To Look For In Luxury RV Parks

Luxury RV Parks TexasYour unforgettable fall or winter vacation is waiting in East Texas at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, one of the finest luxury RV parks in Texas and the southwest.  The Canton, Texas area is home to a variety of great attractions, not the least of which is the First Monday Trade Days market and that means that RVers from all over Texas and the south head to Canton all year round.  These experienced RV owners know that when it comes to finding a place to stop for a night, a week or longer, there is no substitute for a luxury park that takes care of its residents.

What To Watch Out For In A Sub-Standard RV Park

Once you own an RV, you’ll be on the lookout for every RV park in the state.  You’ll soon find out that there are more than you ever imagined; unfortunately, not all of these parks are reputable and are much less luxurious than you may expect.  There are some traits that most of these substandard parks have in common:

  • Bad management – This can cover just about anything from rude employees to neglected facilities.
  • Hidden fees and charges – Just about every RV park will tell you upfront how much it costs to rent a space from them, but they don’t always tell you about the extra money they charge for things like water, electric etc.
  • Crowded lots – RVs parked too close together, especially when your neighbors are loud, can make for a very tense vacation.
  • Too few amenities – Once you’ve parked your RV, you want to know that you’ll have access to things that will make your vacation fun, like swimming pools and WiFi.
What To Look For In A Luxury RV Park

Luxury RV parks also have some things in common that make them the best choice for RVers:

  • Beautiful facilities – Luxury RV parks are well-maintained, clean and are usually situated in scenic areas with lots of natural beauty.
  • Clean bathhouses and laundry facilities.
  • Clubhouses – Central meeting areas equipped with comfortable furniture, TVs and more, which are important for family get-togethers and rainy days.
  • Attentive staff and great management – Good customer service is what sets luxury parks apart from ordinary parks; friendly staff and management that cares are part of that.
  • Lots of amenities – Luxury RV parks are not only situated near outside attractions that are fun and interesting, they also offer on-site amenities, like swimming pools and other recreational activities, that make a vacation fun.

RV Park in Canton TX: Keeping Your Pets Safe On the Open Road (Part Two)

rv park canton tx | Mill Creek Ranch ResortIf you own an RV, you know what it feels like to be king of the open road. Watching miles of freeway fall into your rear view, you’d cruise along peacefully and let the wind brush through your hair. But every road warrior knows that a faithful co-pilot is crucial to an enjoyable journey. For a large number of RVers, their best companion has four paws and coincidentally also enjoys the feeling of wind-swept fur. Traveling with your pet in a home on wheels can be challenging, so let this second half of our two part series guide you and your pet as you travel to an RV park in Canton TX. These top tips will help solve and prevent any problems you might encounter, making your best pal’s accompaniment one of your journey’s greatest pleasures.

Keep it clean: Pets in tiny places can make for a not-so-tiny hair situation. For your own comfort, come prepared with a way to deal with the extra fur that will inevitably accumulate in your RV. A Swiffer Sweeper will tackle any extra hair and dirt tracked in by your pal’s tiny paws (and it takes up very little space).

Bag it up: Turn all those used picnic ziploc bags into doggie doo depositories. By turning the bag inside out before use, you have a clean surface to grab and a quick method to seal, making sure the business stays where you want it.

Play it safe: In case (heaven forbid) your pet accidentally wanders too far from home, bring along a recent colored photo. This will be handy to show around the RV park in Canton TX if Rover ever goes MIA. It is also a good idea to visit your vet before travelling to acquire all the necessary prescribed medications your pet may need—tranquilizers, motion sickness medication, etc. This will help you avoid entrusting your friend’s care to someone you don’t already know.

Feed in style: Use rubbermaid containers to serve your pals—they work just as great with dog food as they do with breakfast cereal. (And they don’t take up too much space.) You can also install fold-out food and water stations into the walls of your RV—pull them out for chow time, tuck them back in when empty for space conservation and travelling ease.

Keep your cool: Let’s be real—your furry pal can’t accompany every single human adventure. What if you need to leave your friend behind and the scorching summer sun refuses to be gentle? Keep your pet cool by purchasing a nifty gadget programmed to send a special alarm call to your cell phone if the internal temperature rises above or drops below a set point. This device plugs directly into the cigarette lighter of your RV.

If your vacation plans include a family road trip to an RV park in Canton TX, the best choice for your getaway is Mill Creek Ranch Resort. 5 Things to do during rainy days while vacationing at an RV Park Dallas TX

RV Park Dallas TX | Mill Creek Ranch ResortIt has been the rainiest of springs in North Texas, and we can only hope (fingers crossed!) that the rain will let up just in time for summer vacation. If it doesn’t, though, don’t worry. While rain isn’t ideal on your family vacation, there are still a ton of activities to do at Mill Creek Ranch Resort or any RV Park Dallas TX. Here are 5 great things to do when your family starts to get a little cabin fever. I mean kids can only read for so long, right?

  1. Play board games. Make sure you pack your family’s favorite board games just in case you have a rainy afternoon (or two… or three). It might also be fun to bring a new game so everyone can learn it together.
  2. Watch Movies. Yeah, yeah, you brought your family out into nature to get them away from TV. But you can’t control the weather. Most RV Parks Dallas TX have internet access, if not a fully equipped media room. Set up your ipad, pop some popcorn, and snuggle up and watch a movie, or, if the weather really isn’t cooperating, marathon a new-to-you TV series.
  3. Meet other travelers. When nature rains on your parade, make your own party. If you’re bored, chances are everyone else is bored too. Share a few drinks and snacks and strike up some good conversation. It’s a bonus if they have kids the same age as yours.
  4. Cook something delicious. Use the rain as an excuse to do what we like to call a “food craft,” which basically just means you get the kids involved in helping. This means making chocolate covered frozen bananas with sprinkles, or just plain old cookies, or put a little extra love into your evening meal. Clearly in your RV you’ll have limited ingredients; that just means you have to get creative! If you’re grilling, make sure the master griller has a good poncho, umbrella, and a nice cold drink.
  5. Don’t let the rain stop you! Especially if it’s not a hard downpour, there’s a peaceful calm that rain brings to nature. Plus, hiking boots are typically somewhat waterproof. And it’s really, really fun to jump in puddles. Grab a raincoat, umbrella, and take a nature walk anyway!

Don’t let the rain ruin your vacation! You can still have a great time with your family at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, rain or shine! Our RV lodge has a big screen TV, games, cards, and business center, and we host activities all throughout the summer. For rates and availability, call us at 877-9273439 or book online!

How to Have a Romantic Getaway at an RV Park in Dallas TX

rv park dallas tx | Mill Creek Ranch ResortWhat could be more romantic than hitting the open road with your sweetie, and feeling the miles stretch behind you as you leave your cares behind. RV people don’t really need an excuse to pack up their home away from home and head off into the sunset, but these tips for a romantic getaway will leave you wanting to pack your bags and leave for the nearest RV park in Dallas TX. Read on to find the best ways to take your love on the road.

Location, location, location: The first step in your weekend of bliss is deciding where to park. You will want to choose a location that is away from the hustle and bustle. The RV sites here at Mill Creek offer a quiet, peaceful hookup in the heart of our resort and private hiking trails that meander through nature’s bounty. If you plan to travel in the off season locations will be less crowded with tourists and families vacationing. You may even have an RV park in Dallas Tx  to yourself at a discounted rate. Besides, visiting a state park in the winter gives you plenty of chances to stay in and keep warm together.

Learn how to unplug: It’s never romantic when your work follows you on vacation. Don’t let your iPhone be the third wheel in your relationship. Turn off the phone and let it go to voicemail. Don’t check facebook every 15 minutes, and avoid the need to tweet out your love on your twitter feed. If you cannot avoid being available for work, set boundaries. Agree that you will only check and respond to necessary emails once a day. Nothing says I love you like giving the gift of your full attention.

Plan activities for two: Staring deeply into one another’s eyes is fun…for a few minutes. After that’s over how do you plan to spend the next forty eight hours? This can be tricky especially for couples that have been together for many years. Plan activities that you both enjoy.  Choose activities that spark the connection we are often too busy for in everyday life. Do you love movies? Plan a marathon, go for a wine tasting or visit a local festival. Are board games your thing? Bring Scrabble and plan a tournament. Choose activities that will help your love grow.

If you are in need of a romantic getaway for two, there isn’t a better location than Mill Creek Ranch Resort. This pristine location offers an RV park in Dallas Tx that is second to none. Beautiful ponds, winding trails, and a host of amenities will make your weekend one to remember. Give us a call today at 877-927-3439 to plan your stay.

RV Park Travel Tips | Mill Creek Ranch Resort

RV Park In Dallas, TX: 5 Tips For Keeping Your RV Secure And Your Belongings Safe

RV Park Travel Tips | Mill Creek Ranch ResortRVersare generally a carefree bunch.  When they get on the road, they don’t have to worry about hotel reservations or finding restaurants because they’re hauling everything they need for a relaxing vacation or weekend getaway.  Most RVers just climb in and head to an RV park in Dallas, TX for sun and fun; but many don’t consider the downside of owning and traveling in an RV and that is that RVs are usually not as secure as regular, non-moving homes.

RV manufacturers often put standardized locks on RVs, which means one key fits all.  This, and the fact that most RVs are rich with access points like doors, windows and skylights, means that they can be a  prime target for thieves.  So, what can you do to keep your RV secure and keep your belongings safe?  Try these tips:

  1.  Pick a great RV park.  If you’re headed to an RV park in Dallas, TX or anywhere else, do your homework.  Learn about the park and the kind of area it’s located in.  Read reviews written by people who’ve been there.  If the park has a website, check it out to see how it’s laid out and if there is any kind of security.  Don’t hesitate to call the park if you have questions.

  1.  Choose pitstops carefully.  When you’re en route to your vacation destination, be careful where you park when you make stops.  Even if you’ll just be away from your RV for a quick dinner, you must make sure you park in a well-lit area, if possible within eyesight of the restaurant or store you’re in.  If you want to stop but don’t see a safe place to leave your rig, keep driving.

  1.  Install new deadbolt locks.  Because RV locks are sometimes standard – they can even be purchased online – it’s important that you or a locksmith installs non-standard deadbolts on all of your RV’s doors.  While you’re at it, make sure that all your window locks and latches are in good working order.  You may also want to consider installing motion-sensing lights on the outside of your RV so that you can be alerted to anyone approaching if you’re inside.

  1.  Always lock your doors.  This is an obvious tip to keep thieves out but it’s also a good idea if you want to keep curious children, who might get hurt, out of your RV if you’re not around.   You should also keep lawn chairs, coolers, grills and other equipment secured if you’re not going to be nearby.  Most RV parks and the people who visit them consider themselves one big community so it’s easy to forget that there are people who aren’t part of the RV community who may not hesitate to take what you leave out.

  1.  Don’t leave personal information in the open.  Find a place to secure any personal documents that may have social security numbers or any other information inside your RV.  You may have room for a locking file cabinet or you may have a secret hiding place – either one will do if you must carry those kinds of documents with you.  You don’t want to leave yourself vulnerable to identity theft.

There’s no better RV park in Dallas, TX for you to choose for your vacation than Mill Creek Ranch Resort.  At Mill Creek Ranch Resort, we want you to feel safe, secure and have lots of fun, too.  Call us at Mill Creek Ranch Resort at (877) 927-3439 to reserve an RV site today.

RV Park In Dallas, TX: Get Your RV Organized Before You Hit The Road

rv park dallas tx | Mill Creek Ranch ResortIf you’re packing up your RV and heading out on the road this year and your destination is an RV park in Dallas, TX or anywhere else in the country, you’re probably going through your usual struggle with organizing your RV space.  No matter how much you pare down, you probably still don’t have enough room for all of the critical items you need for an extended trip.  Making lists of things you need in order of importance is a great way to start the organizing process.  After that, here are some tips for making maximum use of the space you have inside your RV:

  •  Nest as many things as possible. Buying cookware that has pieces that can be nested inside each other will save space in the kitchen. For serving and storage, consider using collapsible plasticware that takes up two-thirds less space than regular plasticware.  Never let a container be stored empty – it can always hold something.
  •  Take advantage of vertical storage.  Hanging shoe organizers work well for storing everything from towels to kitchen utensils  They can be hung from rods inside narrow cabinets or attached to walls and inside cabinet doors to hold toiletries, magazines, tools and other miscellaneous supplies.
  •  Take advantage of horizontal storage.  Install low-profile slide-out drawers under tables and desks to store writing supplies, phone chargers and small hand tools.  For pre-existing drawers under couches and beds, look for dividers that can keep clothing neatly stacked and separated.
  •  Store dry goods in plastic bins.  You’ll save more space when you move dry goods like cereal, sugar, etc. from their original packaging into stacking, plastic bins that will fit more easily into cabinets.
  •  Use repositionable hooks wherever possible.  Repositionable hooks are a boon to RVers because they don’t require screws that can deface walls and cabinets and they’re sturdy.  Use hooks to hang kitchen utensils next to the stove, to hang storage pods inside cabinet doors and to hang hats, flashlights, umbrellas and leashes near the door.  With the wide variety of repositionable hooks available, there’s almost no limit to their usefulness inside your RV
  •  Use Velcro liberally.  It sometimes seems like Velcro was invented to make RV life easier.  You can use flat Velcro strips to keep your remote controls in place and in one central location.  They can also be used to stick first aid kits, fire extinguishers and other emergency items to walls.  Velcro straps come in handy when you need to keep hoses and electrical cords from uncoiling.  Once they’re secured, you can even attach them to the doors of your storage compartments so they’ll be easily accessible once you reach the RV park in Dallas, TX.

There are almost as many storage and organization ideas for RVs as there are RVers so, once you get to your destination, ask your fellow travelers for their tips and tricks.  If your destination of choice is an RV park in Dallas, TX, consider Mill Creek Ranch Resort.  Mill Creek Ranch Resort combines the peaceful beauty of the East Texas Piney Woods with the kinds of amenities you’d expect from a 21st century RV park.  Call us today at (877) 927-3439 to find out more or you can visit us online at www.millcreekranchresort.com to make a reservation.

Make a list so you don’t forget to pack everything you’ll need for your pet.  Bowls, food, leash, waste pick-up bags, litter and litter box, medications and toys are usually the most important things you’ll need.  In addition, you may want to consider a portable exercise pen.  These normally come in panels that can easily be stored in an RV.  Although we have a great dog park, you may want to keep your pet close by but with a little freedom to move.
  1.  Keep vaccinations up to date. Making sure all of your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date and they’ve been treated for fleas and ticks recently makes the dog park safer for everyone..  You don’t want any hitchhikers going home with you after your vacation.  Also, if you have a pet with some ongoing medical problems, plan ahead and find a veterinarian near where you’ll be parked – in case of emergencies.
  1. Have permanent Identification for your dog.  There are two great ways to make sure that if you and your furry friend are separated, you can be reunited; microchipping and tattoos.  Your first line of defense against this is a tag on the collar that has the dog’s name, your name and your cell phone number.  But since tags can come off, microchipping or tattooing are best.
  1.  Install proper restraints in your RV.  Safeguard your pets by purchasing restraints for them when travelling.  It’s as unsafe for animals to move around inside your RV when it’s on the road as it is for people to move around.  Any sudden stop or movement and they can become projectiles that can endanger your life – and theirs.  Also, remember to maintain climate control inside your RV if you’re leaving your pet alone inside for any length of time.  Make sure that all systems are working before you head out so that your pets aren’t exposed to temperature extremes.
  1.  Follow leash and curfew guidelines of your RV park.  When you get to your destination, be a responsible pet owner.  Keep your dog on a leash or your cat inside your RV.  If there’s a doggie curfew (as there is here at Mill Creek Ranch Resort), obey it.  Try your best to keep your dog from barking incessantly and always pick up after them when they go to the bathroom.

RV Park Texas Travel Tips for the Newbie from Mill Creek Ranch Resort

RV Park TX | MIll Creek Ranch Resort

If you’ve just bought an RV, we know you have visions of the open road, seeing the country, and all with your happy family right there with you in the ‘ol camper. And while it’s called “camping,” no tent setup is required at your favorite RV Park Texas, you don’t have to sleep on the ground, no carrying everything you need in a backpack that’s bigger than your oldest child, and going to the bathroom doesn’t require a shovel. You couldn’t be more excited.

However, there are a few rookie mistakes people make when taking their first few trips that can turn your fun family vacation into something that you need a vacation from. Here are a few tips for the newbies. Just because we’ve made these mistakes doesn’t mean you have to.

Plan your route ahead of time: Planning your route ahead of time and spending just a few minutes with google maps before you leave can help save you time on the road and help keep you from getting lost. Research which RV park Texas you’d like to stay at and book ahead; some of the really popular parks do fill up and it’s no fun to scramble for another place to go, especially if you already had a setback and get in late.

Time: It’s incredibly important to keep in mind that this is a vacation, not a race to the finish. Don’t schedule 7-8-9 hour drives, at least not for your maiden voyage, because seasoned RVers know that there can always be hangups along the way that will have you setting up camp in the dark, with no staff to help you orient yourself. Maybe you forgot something and need to stop at Wal-mart, then there’s always unexpected traffic, unexpected weather, unexpected “uh oh, where’s the dog?” Keep your driving days to 4-5 hours. Stop and take pictures along way, stop for a picnic or enjoy more time at the RV park Texas once you get there.

Become familiar with your equipment: This tip can really have an article all on its own. Make sure you know your RV, inside and out and this includes knowing how to drive it (this seems obvious, but you’d be surprised). It’s probably even worth the annoyance to give it a spin in the rain before embarking on your first road trip.

Be careful, have fun, and don’t forget to visit us at the best RV park Texas has, Mill Creek Ranch Resort.

Another Great Texas RV Park Recipe!

What goes along with summer fun while vacationing with family at a Texas RV Park? Great food of course!  If you’ve done much camping at Texas RV parks maybe you’re already a pro at dutch oven cooking, or maybe you’ve always wanted to try your hand at it, but have been a bit too intimidated to get started.

Roger L Beattie of the Backwoods Home Magazine describes dutch ovens: “squatting heavily in dank basements, drafty attics, and dusty, cluttered garages, these three-legged hulks from a bygone era wait impatiently to release their treasures.  Until then, they are pitted by time and tarnished by neglect.  For those who will uncover the mystery, their gaping caverns can once again be brimming with magic.

“From the birth of our nation, Dutch ovens have been an integral and versatile part of Americana.  Sadly today’s high-tech hustle-and-bustle lifestyle has all but forgotten the art of “leather-glove cuisine.”  The coal-black cast iron ovens appear outdated, unfriendly, and forbidding.  Interestingly however, with seven simple secrets revealed, the beginning camp cook and the consummate backyard chef can utilize these forgotten friends to produce a marvelous and unforgettable variety of succulent delicacies.”

Here is a helpful link for beginners and expert dutch oven cooks alike with Roger’s seven secrets of dutch oven cooking.

If the first thing that comes to mind when you think of dutch oven cooking is dump cake, think again!  Virtually anything you can cook in the oven, on the stove top, or in the microwave can be cooked in a dutch oven.  Dutch ovens are one of the most versatile pans you can own!  For those that are new to the art, here is a link to some handy tips from WikiHow on how to use a dutch oven.

And for those of you who are ready for your next trip, take advantage of the RV specials  here at our beautiful RV resort, a top rated Good Sam Park for 2012 and who many call the best East Texas RV Park.  And while you’re doing your meal planning to decide what delicious food you’ll enjoy while you’re here, here’s a great dutch oven recipe for you to put on your menu list, Campfire Jambalaya, the grand-prize winning recipe from Scouting magazine’s national contest.  Complements of Kevin Young and Jim Brown, Scoutmaster and assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 44, in Heyburn, Idaho:

SEAFOOD JAMBALAYA

1 pound boneless chicken breast, cubed

1 pound mild Italian sausage, chunked

1 pound mixed seafood (shrimp, crab, crawfish)

1/3 cup oil

1 large onion, sliced and chopped

1/2 cup celery, chopped

2 small red or green peppers, quartered and sliced

2 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped

1 14-oz. can chicken broth

3 cups okra, sliced

2 cups mushrooms, sliced

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon white pepper

1 teaspoon gumbo filé (powdered sassafras leaves)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 cup orange juice

2 to 3 cups long-grained white rice

* Option: Replace cayenne with crushed and dried hot red peppers.

Cook in a deep, 14-inch Dutch oven. Heat chicken and Italian sausage until cooked through, but not browned. In a separate pot, steam seafood mixture until done (shrimp will turn pink).

In the Dutch-oven lid or another pan, sauté onions, celery, and red or green peppers until tender. Add the sautéed mixture, along with the tomatoes, broth, okra, and mushrooms to the chicken and sausage. Mix thoroughly.

Add dry peppers, gumbo filé, and rice. Mix thoroughly.

Cover and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Add Worcestershire sauce and orange juice. Add water as necessary to cook rice. Add steamed seafood mixture. Simmer for another 10 minutes.

 Serves 8 to 10.

Finding The Best of East Texas on the Piney Woods Wine Trail While Staying in our Texas Cottages

Once known only for its wild grape species growing naturally for thousands of years along lakes, rivers and streams, Texas has matured to become a full-bodied and rich wine country.  No longer must you spend a fortune traveling to France or California, great tasting wine is made in our own backyard.
One needn’t spend hours formulating a self guided wine tour in East Texas, the work’s already been done and for your next weekend getaway all you need do is follow the Piney Woods Wine Trail .  May we suggest an enjoyable afternoon trip, or a tranquil weekend tasting wine and then relaxing in one of the beautiful Texas cottages along your route?  But which route?

How about beginning in the beautiful highlands of the Sabine Valley at the Fairhaven Winery located just north of US 80 at 5340 South FM 2369, Hawkins, TX 75765?The folks at Fairhaven Winery pride themselves in fine grade handmade wines produced from hand picked estate grapes.

Upon leaving Hawkins our recommended second stop is the unique Miranda Lambert Store and Red 55 Winery located at 100 E Hubbard St, Lindale, TX 75771.     Many folks enjoy the winery store’s gifts and products from Miranda’s merchandise line, but the Belle of the ball is the wonderful wine.  The Lambert family partnered with Lou Vinery Vineyards to produce an amazingly diverse wine offering with Miranda’s signature names.

Next stop we suggest visiting the Crump Valley Vineyards (127 Crump Lane, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482)  where you’ll enjoy great wine at a great price and a whole lot of great home grown entertainment to go along with it!

Finally head to Canton, Texas where the town of 3,581’s claim to fame is it’s tremendous growth once a month of up to 400,000 shoppers converging for the World Famous Trade Days which they tout as the oldest and largest continuously operating outdoor market in the United States.

But Canton is much more than a 4 day a month shopping mecca, it’s home to two of the areas’ superb wineries, Savannah Winery & Bistro and Texas Roads Winery & Roadhouse.  The Savannah Winery & Bistro  located at 574 E Dallas St, Canton, TX 75103 offers wine tasting any time.  If you agree that variety is the spice of life then Savannah Winery is the stop for you.  They carry wines from Brushy Creek Vineyards, Homestead Winery, Landon Winery, Los Pinos Ranch, Lou Viney Cellars and Messina Hof.

The Texas Roads Winery & Roadhouse is a short hop skip and a jump down the road at 124 W Dallas St in Canton.  Offering over 30 local Texas wines with signature wines by winemaker Michael Ramsey.

After you’ve shared your self guided wine tour with that special someone, why not give your trip the perfect ending by enjoying the rest of the weekend at a beautiful Texas cottage?  A short mile and a half away is the ideal place to relax with a fantastic Romance Package at Mill Creek Ranch Resort.     There’s no need to rush home when you can enjoy one of Mill Creek Ranch Resort’s peaceful Texas cottages.  Pull out the wine glasses and your newly acquired spirits and enjoy overnight accommodations for two in a luxurious Texas cottage, with a dozen roses awaiting your arrival.  The special package includes a $100 dinner credit at Four Winds Steakhouse , full use of the wonderful Mill Creek Ranch Resort amenities and a special 2 p.m. late check-out.

If you feel you must visit  just one more vineyard before your trip is complete, head South to Athens, TX to Tara Vineyard and Winery.  They have a unique bottle shaped bar and fine cuisine that perfectly pair with their signature wines .  You can have a pleasant reminder of your adventure each month when you join the Tara wine club.   The winemakers choose a special wine to share each month with the club members.  You can choose from 1-3 bottles per month.

Make plans today for your next weekend getaway enjoying the finest wines and Texas cottages that East Texas has to offer!
