Spend a Day on the Lakes of East Texas

When you book your rental with Mill Creek Ranch Resort at one of our Canton, TX, RV parks or cabin/cottage rentals, you are surrounded by the glorious East Texas lakes. We strive to stand out from other East Texas resorts and offer guests many luxurious amenities and opportunities for adventure. A great way to spend your East Texas vacation is to take a day trip to the lake.

What To Bring to the East Texas Lakes

  1. Rain or shine, pack sun protection for a day outdoors. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends your sunscreen should be at least SPF 30, broadspectrum, and water resistant. Some sun protection people often overlook when packing is sun protection lip balm, a wide-brimmed hat, UPF clothing, and 100% UV protection sunglasses.
  2. Don’t forget to pack an insulated cooler filled with drinks and snacks. A fun day at the lake can work up a mighty appetite and thirst. For guests that are 21+, alcoholic beverages can be a fun addition to pack, but make sure you prioritize safety. Just like you wouldn’t drive a car while intoxicated, don’t navigate a boat.
  3. Packing towels and a dry change of clothes is a great idea. Even if you’re not planning on swimming, there’s always a chance you could get wet. If that happens, you’ll be glad that you came prepared.

How To Spend a Day on the Lake in East Texas

Fishing is always a great time, especially when you are close to the East Texas trophy bass fishing lake. Located just 30 miles away from Mill Creek Ranch Resort is the legendary Lake Fork. Maybe you’ll get lucky and set another Texas state record? Lake Fork holds 15 out of the top 20 Texas state records for largemouth bass. You can also enjoy a day of sailing when you get a boat rental from Ricky’s Boat Rentals

If you don’t want to make the journey to Lake Fork, you can fish at one of the eight ponds at Mill Creek Ranch Resort. We’ll even supply the poles and bait. Perhaps you can even beat the 9.5 lb. record for fish caught here from either the dock or a paddle boat.

Your adventure to the East Texas lakes begins when you book your rental today at Mill Creek Ranch Resort!

East Texas Wildflowers Near Canton

Texas has over 5,000 species of flowering plants, but some are region-specific. Texas Highways, the state’s travel magazine, has curated a helpful brochure, mapping out all the surrounding regions. Typically, the best floral spreads are found between March and May, with peaks in April. Great rain can bring the occasional blossom in the summertime, but spring is the best time to spot East Texas wildflowers.

Dallas

Dallas sits in the Blackland Prairies, a wildflower region named after the area’s fertile black soil. The most common wildflowers spotted on drives are bluebonnets, antelope horns, bluebell, and fleabane. Head to Texas Discovery Gardens to mingle with butterflies, wildflowers’ important pollinators.

Athens

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center features over 10,00 square feet of wildflower displays. Athens is also home to the renowned East Texas Arboretum & Botanical Society. Get ready to snap photos of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, winecups, larkspur, and more.

Tyler

Head east to see the beautiful Azalea and Spring Flower Trail this spring! There’ll be mile after mile of blooming azaleas, dogwoods, tulips, wisteria, and even more. Many have described this annual event as a “floral wonderland” and draws in many tourists.

East Texas Wildflowers Etiquette

  • Always respect and avoid private property
  • Never enter a private space without permission
  • Don’t trample or pick wildflowers (we need their seeds)
  • If you pull over on the roadside, do so safely by making sure all four wheels are off the roadway, and you’re not obstructing traffic

The Top 4 East Texas Wineries

Photo of a Couple Toasting With Their Child at One of the Best East Texas WineriesEast Texas is widely celebrated for its tranquil wilderness, bustling flea markets, picturesque small towns, and reinvigorating ranches. But a rapidly growing winery scene continues to allure DFW metroplex residents as well as RVers who’re merely rolling through the territory in search of something special. You’d be hard-pressed to find a vineyard around these parts about a decade ago. Fast forward to today, however, and there are over a dozen East Texas wineries scattered across the region in the communities of Garden Valley, Chandler, and even right here in Canton. Whether you’re looking for a fun girls’ getaway activity or a mid-day adventure with friends or family, one of these visually-striking Texas vineyards will appeal to the masses. And the perfect place to start and finish each glorious day in East Texas is right here at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, one of the top-rated RV parks in Texas.

The 4 Best East Texas Wineries

To ensure that your next escape to Mill Creek Ranch is nothing short of flawless, we’ve compiled four of our favorite East Texas wineries. We might be a bit biased, but they’re likely some of the best vineyards in Texas. Depending on the destination, you and your group can partake in a wine tasting, vineyard tour, or a friendly meet and greet with the owners.

Cannon Creek Vineyard – Canton

Let’s start in Canton at the family-owned and operated Cannon Creek Vineyard, a 30-acre operation that’s entering its fourth year. Cannon Creek specializes in Blanc du Bois and Black Spanish (Lenoir) grapes, both of which are American hybrids. Black Spanish grapes are sweet and juicy, while Blanc du Bois gives off hints of lemon, honey, and banana with a citrusy aroma. Because Cannon Creek is in its “infancy,” they currently only market six bottles (three whites and three reds).

Valle della Pace – Garden Valley

Valle della Pace’s modest but sincere tour is what typically attracts oenophiles (wine connoisseurs). The tasting room is open for eight hours, four days a week. Their lush, well-groomed vineyard is an idyllic spot for a romantic photo with your partner. Dr. Clark, the house vintner, is a New Orleans native with a Ph.D. physical biochemistry.

White Fox Vineyards – Murchison

The short journey from Mill Creek Ranch to the north edge of Murchison is a pleasant one that carves through dense forestry, past babbling creeks, and weaves alongside serene farmland. Unlike most East Texas wineries, White Fox sits on over 300 acres of land—there’s obviously a lot of room for expansion. As you might imagine, these lovely fields are a perfect spot for a wedding. The tasting room’s wine garden overlooks the countryside; thus, making it a hard place to leave.

Green Goat Winery & Vineyard – Chandler

Green Goat narrowly thwarted Mineola’s Grand Oaks Vineyards & Winery to round out this handy list of East Texas wineries. The aromatic, oaky vino itself, combined with the always-changing live music lineup and the pleasant branding, makes Green Goat a popular hangout. As a reminder, Green Goat is only open on Friday and Saturday.

8 East Texas Bachelor Party Ideas

One of the most memorable weekends of a man’s lifetime is his long-awaited bachelor party. Each year, thousands of men flock to overcrowded and overpriced destinations, such as Las Vegas, Miami, and New Orleans, but sometimes the best place to gather with your friends is off the beaten path. For those who reside in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, East Texas is a popular destination because it’s close, affordable, and undeniably secluded. An East Texas bachelor party certainly isn’t for everyone—you have to love the outdoors, be creative, and prefer fireside relaxation over cramped clubs.

Adventure and Ingenuity: 8 East Texas Bachelor Party Ideas

Bachelor parties have become commonplace here at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, primarily because of our proximity to the First Monday Trade Days and our countless on-site amenities. An East Texas Resort for Spring Break? Yes!

east texas resort for spring breakSpring break is right around the corner. If you’re hoping to get away, it’s not too late to book a family trip to an East Texas Resort. Spring break is the perfect time to recapture the slower pace and family closeness you shared over the winter holidays while enjoying the freshness that comes from spring weather as nature starts to wake up.

What can your family do outdoors?

  • Play disc-golf! It’s the perfect opportunity for the kids to learn some finesse from grandpa or mom. Ramp up the fun (and competitive) factor by having “closest-to-hole” prizes on certain holes. A prize bucket with candy provides the extra motivation to hone your flinging skills.
  • Take a nature walk. Spring is the perfect time to look at the daily progress trees make as their leaves unfold more each day. What a perfect opportunity to talk about turning over a new leaf, fresh starts, and the beauty of the natural world. Bonus: who can spot the most types of trees? Bigger bonus: who can spot the most bird nests?
  • Paddle boat races! If that’s not your speed, perhaps some paddle boat dawdling while you enjoy the water will do that trick? Either way, paddle boats are a great way to get on the lake. Bonus: you can introduce your family to life without electronics for a while!
  • Whether you’re a novice or experienced angler, fishing in a stocked pond is always a springtime pleasure.
  • Early spring evenings are often rather nippy; gather around a fire pit and make s’mores! Who can resist that warm, gooey, chocolatey goodness?
  • Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit! Whether you hit the gorgeous pool or relax in a hot tub, the water is always a great place to spend time with the family.

What can your family do indoors?

  • Board games and puzzles provide the perfect way to sit down and connect with your family during spring break. Whether you’re working on an intense game of chess or laughing at charades, your family can make memories and strengthen bonds from the comfort of your own cabin.
  • Take time to cook together. Does your family have a special recipe you’d love to pass down to your kids? Using your “extra” time on vacation to teach and feed your kids provides a lifetime of memories for them, and it’s also nice on the budget.
  • Color! Coloring books for all ages are the rage right now. They’re easy to transport and great to have on hand for the unexpected rainy day. Bonus: let everyone have the opportunity to DJ your coloring time and start learning to appreciate all the styles of music your family enjoys. You may find your tastes are more similar than you had thought.

East Texas might not be the obvious choice for spring break, but a few days at a cabin in the beauty of the piney woods could be the perfect way for your family to enjoy the beginning of a new season. The Mill Creek Resort Ranch offers your family all of the options mentioned, and many more, too! You won’t want to miss all the activities our events coordinator is cooking up–excursions, crafts, and more. Let Mill Creek Resort Ranch host your family for a spring break vacation filled with memories for a lifetime, all at an
