The Benefits of Staying in Texas RV Parks vs. Hotels

The Benefits of East Texas RV Parks vs. Hotels

When it comes to travel accommodations, many people automatically turn to hotels. While hotels can sometimes be the right choice, the Mill Creek Ranch Resort team put together this informative blog post on the perks of our East Texas RV parks. There are many Canton accommodation options at Mill Creek Ranch Resort besides hotel rooms, such as our award-winning East Texas RV parks and cottage rentals. So keep an open mind while booking your trip to Canton, Texas!

The Top 4 Benefits of Staying in East Texas RV Parks

  1. East Texas RV parks come with a community experience you can never get from hotels. Imagine nights huddled around the campfire, sharing stories with your fellow travelers.
  2. Hotel rooms can get pretty claustrophobic if you have more than a couple of people in your travel group. In one of the East Texas RV parks at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, you can bring the comfort of your home with you on your travels. Your family or travel companions can have plenty of space. At Mill Creek Ranch Resort RV sites, we offer plush amenities, such as full hook-ups for water, sewer, electric, WiFi internet, a camp store with grocery items, extra clean showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities.
  3. Speaking of space, at one of our East Texas RV parks, you have the option to go on peaceful walks. Whether it’s to enjoy some alone time during your trip or as a fun group activity, the great outdoors provides the perfect opportunity to relax. In a cramped hotel room, it’s a lot harder to have that much-needed break from your surroundings. Introverts will especially understand this, but even the biggest extrovert needs their alone time.
  4. A stressful part of traveling is packing. First, you have to figure out what you need, and then you need to find a way to stuff it into the limited space of your suitcase. When staying in one of the fabulous East Texas RV parks, you can reasonably bring as many comforts from home as you want! From bikes to paddle boards and other equipment you would otherwise have to rent if you stayed in a hotel.

First Monday Trade Days

First Monday Trade Days: A Texas Tradition

Tiny Houses East TexasWedged between the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolis and the charming city of Tyler rests Canton, an unpretentious small town with a population of 3,836. On one weekend a month – Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday – Canton comes alive with over 100,000 eager visitors from all across the South. Why do over a million people flock to Canton every year? The answer is First Monday Trade Days, of course. This world-renowned flea market has transformed from a small-town trading expo to one of ten largest markets in the United States. Overnight lodging is at a premium during First Monday Trade Days. That’s why many Texans are sampling the latest housing craze: tiny homes. Mill Creek Ranch Resort is a short walk from First Monday, so don’t think twice and book one of our tiny homes today before it’s too late!

The History of First Monday

In theory, First Monday Trade Days’ creation was happenstance. It all started in the 1850s when local farmers would travel a short distance to Canton on the first Monday of each month to witness court proceedings and, occasionally, hangings. Naturally, city and country folk alike began selling and trading produce, livestock, and goods. Month by month and year by year the event grew. It eventually became evident that organizers needed to move the event to the weekend and quickly expand. This bustling flea market has survived tornados, zoning issues, and aggressive expansion. There is no end to what you may find in Canton, Texas at First Monday.

Important Insider Information

  • First Monday Trade Days take place on Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month.
  • Arrive at the break of dawn to avoid crowds.
  • There are over 450 acres of land to cover, so please dress according to the weather.
  • Plan on attending on Thursday or Friday to avoid massive crowds.
  • Rent a cart. Some large items are too good to pass up!
  • Bring cash.
  • Grab a map, so you don’t get lost.
  • It can take more than eight hours to walk the entire grounds, so plan on spending multiple nights in your tiny home or luxury cottage rental.
  • Consult our Complete Survival Guide to First Monday for more information.

Come Hungry!

There is a seemingly never-ending line of delicious fair food at First Monday Trade Days. Think outside the box by avoiding typical treats and eats. Some of the area’s best vendors, restaurants, and catering companies plant their food trucks and carts to feed hungry flea market flippers. Keep your eyes peeled for boiled crawfish, catfish tacos, roasted corn, barbecue brisket, pecan pie, and hand-squeezed lemonade.

Top four reasons to rent a tiny house TX for the weekend

tiny house txTiny homes and small space living have gone from a tiny niche to a bustling movement in recent years. Have you ever wondered what all the fuss was about? Are you intrigued, but think, “Oh, I could never do that.” Don’t knock it ‘til you try it! Here are four amazing reasons to rent a tiny house in TX for a little weekend getaway.

  • See what all the fuss is about! What better way to experience tiny living than by trying it yourself? If it’s not your permanent living solution so no worries – it’s just a weekend! Renting a tiny house for vacation gives the ultimate experience in minimal living – but on a temporary basis. You can go back to all your stuff once the weekend is over.
  • It’s not just an RV in cuter clothes. While tiny homes and RV’s are similar in a lot of ways, bear in mind a tiny house isn’t just an RV that’s shaped like a cottage. A lot of people like to try the tiny house and do a little comparison. While tiny homes do generally look like a small regular home (or extra-large dollhouse), there are some fundamental differences, like multiple stories, better weatherproofing, and more options for customization.
  • Try it before you buy it! Renting a tiny house in TX for a short period of time is a great way to give it a test run if you are considering chucking the stuff and going with a more minimal living situation. It’s also a great way to get ideas for what you like and what you don’t like so that if/when you take on tiny living you have a better idea of how everything works and fits together in such a small space. It’s also helpful to know if you can stand sleeping in a loft where the ceiling is not quite as far away from you as you’re used to.
  • Recognize there’s a takeaway, even if tiny living isn’t for you. Fact: tiny living isn’t for everyone. Also a fact: most of us have too much stuff! There is a little lesson to be learned from tiny and minimal living; even without all the stuff, life still goes on. And, quite comfortably!

Looking for a tiny house to try on for size? Check out The Maple at Mill Creek Ranch Resort! The Maple sleeps three with a queen bed in the loft and 2nd sleeping area downstairs. It also features a full bath, a fully-equipped kitchen, and even air conditioning! At Mill Creek Ranch Resort, you also get to enjoy all the resort-amenities we have to offer.

Best appliances for Camper life

Best appliances for your RV or Tiny House when stopping at a Canton Trade Days RV Park

Canton Trade Days RV ParkWhen headed to a Canton Trade Days RV park, your camper is quite literally your home away from home. For the most part, you’d probably like to be able to do most of the things in your home-away, even if it is in a somewhat reduced fashion.

In other words, you will need some small kitchen appliances for your RV or tiny house but space is, of course, limited. While a lot of these decisions boil down to personal preference, here are a few considerations. What should you bring and what should you leave behind??

Microwave or toaster oven? Most RV’s and tiny homes alike have some kind of oven/stove installed in them. This means you can leave your toaster oven at home (unless of course, you have no oven/stovetop). Microwaves are a different story. If you have a penchant for popcorn, best make some room. Otherwise, reheat everything in the oven and call it a day. Do keep in mind the gross majority of RV ovens and stovetops use propane.

Egg steamer. Wait, what? If you’re really not into elaborate cooking and don’t want to mess with a bunch of pots and pans but do like eggs in the morning, consider an egg steamer. They are extremely tiny, inexpensive and can hard, medium or soft boil your eggs lickety-split. Many of them also come with extra trays for poached or scrambled eggs. You don’t have to use a pot, pan, the stove or its propane.

Multi-tasking blender. Blenders are so versatile these days, aren’t they? A Ninja operates as a blender, shake maker and all-around food processor. The worst part is keeping all the parts together.

Dishwasher: yay or nay? Some people just HATE washing dishes. If this is you, consider a countertop dishwasher.

What about the Instant Pot? If your question is the Instant Pot, the answer is yes. It is just too versatile to leave behind. An instant pot is especially useful if you do not have a cooking range in your RV.

Coffee pot or an electric kettle? Pour-over coffee is not only popular these days, it’s super easy. This makes the electric kettle much more versatile (and typically smaller!) than a coffee pot. It also reduces your reliance on propane to boil water on your RV stove.

Do keep power in mind when using your road-friendly appliances and remember to not use everything all at once!

tiny house

Buy land, find a community or stay on the road? Where to park your tiny house.

tiny houseThere’s so much versatility in owning a tiny house, deciding to minimize your lifestyle is only the first step. Deciding what to do with the tiny house once you get it (most importantly, where to park it) is probably the second biggest decision after deciding to turn tiny in the first place. There is a lot of gray area when it comes to the legalities of parking your tiny home. What are the options for tiny house living?

• Stay on the road. Many people choose a tiny house as an alternative to an RV. In this case, the tiny house will be on wheels and you have the freedom to roll where the wind blows you. This is popular amongst families with young children, families willing to homeschool, and digital nomads. Keep in mind that if you plan on parking for an extended period of time, you need to make sure you can do so legally.

• Buy Land. Buying land and then building a tiny house is another popular option for tiny home dwellers. While more expensive than the “RV” tiny home, this is a less expensive alternative to buying a standard home. An advantage to buying your own land is that if you’re not planning on ever being roadbound, you can lay foundation and plumbing and have a more traditional (albeit smaller) set up like a regular home. This is great for people that already have an idea of where they want to hang their forever hats. Alternatively, owning land means you will always have a place to park your tiny-home-on-wheels while you’re not traveling. Do be conscious of any city or neighborhood zoning regulations before buying land.

Build it in a Friend or Family Member’s Back Yard. A tiny home can be an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU. If you know someone that’s willing to let you live on their property, go for it.

Find a Tiny House Community. Finding a tiny house community is a pretty easy way to plop right into a place that you know is both legal and appreciates tiny living. Additionally, you are surrounded by people that are also tiny living.

• Live in your tiny home recreationally. If you want to join the movement but aren’t wanting to commit full-time, consider it a vacation home. Many cities will let you park a tiny home if it’s only lived-in temporarily. Alternatively, you could find a community or resort that specializes in part-time vacation rentals and even make money renting out your tiny home while you are away.

For more information on parking your tiny house in East Texas, call Mill Creek Ranch Resort today! We have RV slots (perfect for tiny dwellers on the go), or, rent or purchase one of our tiny homes on location! Call us at 877-927-3439.

tiny house kitchen hacks

Small space hacks for tiny house kitchens

tiny house kitchensTiny living teaches us that less is more, but there is one area of the tiny home that often takes a little more creativity to sort out. Tiny house kitchens can require a little extra attention because they still carry many of the challenges of even the most extensive kitchen. Namely, counter space, dining space, and storage space. Here are some small-space kitchen hacks to add to your tiny kitchen.

Use every inch of space you do have.

Including the walls. Installing towel hooks, a knife magnet strip or hanging dividers (large or small) will free up oodles of drawer space. You don’t even have to break the bank; IKEA has a whole section dedicated specifically to kitchen wall storage.

Seriously, all the space. Floor to ceiling.

Don’t forget about all the usable space on the ceiling or up underneath any cabinetry to hang mugs, utensils or even pots and pans. If your tiny house is on the move, do be sure to look for hardware that will keep everything secure.

Organize and layer.

Organizing is key when it comes to keeping a small space full of the necessities without using its functionality. Use drawer trays, organizers and cabinet shelf inserts to layer and stack, maximizing your storage space.

Give everything the gift of multitasking.

When it comes to tiny houses, nothing gets to do just one job. Your stairs are also storage cabinets, and your dining table is also your prep area and possibly your desk in between meals (and possibly even your impromptu ironing board). Any time you can, add a hinge to a surface area to stow away when not in use.

Put it in the garage.

The hottest trend in tiny house kitchens is an appliance garage. It’s mostly an apt name for your appliances (like the toaster, coffee pot, or microwave) stowed away in an easily accessible cabinet to save on counter space. Put them on roller shelves that pull out for easy access.

Tuck and roll.

Another great space saving hack is to have individual pieces on rollers so you can tuck them away. Tuck stools under a countertop so it can be used for food prep; until you eat. Then roll them back out and eat on your counter space.

Mill Creek Ranch Resort marries tiny house living with resort amenities. For more information on our available tiny houses, call us at 877-927-3439. Want to try before you buy? No worries! We also rent our tiny house cottages! Call for reservations and availability!

Tiny House Loving

Here at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, we love the tiny house, and we’re not the only ones. Lots of people are jumping on the simple living lifestyle, cutting out the extra space to minimize clutter and distraction, as well as lessen their impact on the environment.

Our grounds are peppered with beautiful cottages and homes, big on personality and small on space. It’s a great way to vacation, or even try before you buy into living tiny. (Even if you don’t want to live this way full time, there are benefits to owning a cottage at the Resort.) And we’ve been getting the word out there. Here are a few places where we’ve been featured.

The National Tiny House & Simple Living Jamboree

The annual Jamboree is a great place to explore, whether you’re an enthusiast or just curious about the lifestyle. Tour all sorts of tiny structures, join in the workshops, and learn more about what it takes to live simply and sustainably in a small environment.

We loved talking to everyone, seeing what everyone had to offer, and rubbing elbows with some of the big personalities in the tiny house community. We even got to host some of those personalities after the Jamboree was over!

We were honored to have Darren and Lisa from Tiny Houses Australia go on a live tour through the resort back in October (watch it here). This incredible duo has been working hard to spread the word about tiny homes and they’ve created an inspiring and supportive community for anyone interested in small living. Check out their Facebook page to join the discussion and learn more about what it takes to go tiny.

Thanks to everyone who supported us, and to all in the tiny home community. To celebrate, we have a special offer for anyone who attended the National Tiny House & Simple Living Jamboree: show us your ticket and get $25 off when you stay in one of our tiny houses or cabins.

Come on by and see why small is the new big.

Cabin Rentals East Texas

Cabin Rentals East Texas: Rent A Tiny Home For The Holidays

Cabin Rentals East TexasIf you’re ready for a different kind of holiday this year, put cabin rentals East Texas on your short list of options for a stress-free, relaxing way to spend Christmas, New Year’s or any other winter celebration.  Cabin rentals East Texas are a great choice for just about anyone who wants to get away from it all, whether you’re an empty-nester, a newlywed couple or even a family with children.

Shrink Your Celebration To A Manageable Size

Though there’s something to be said for big get-togethers, big feasts and big decorating, those things can get to be a big headache year after year.  If you’re one of those people who dreads the day after Thanksgiving because you know it means you have to start preparing your home for guests and planning for holiday meals and baking, think about downsizing to a cabin in the East Texas Piney Woods that looks very much like those tiny houses you’ve seen on the house hunting shows.

A Smaller House Means A Simpler Holiday

Have you ever been curious about the tiny house lifestyle? When you rent a tiny house-style cabin, you get a good taste for how life can get a lot simpler.  Less square footage means less stuff to pile up and even less cleaning. It also means you have a built-in excuse not to complicate your vacation with house guests who want you to do all the work while they relax.  And, when you make a tiny house vacation your holiday gift to your family, you won’t have to worry so much about buying gifts that will no one will remember next year, especially when your cabin is part of a resort with great amenities and activities for kids and adults.

Embrace The Tiny Living Lifestyle

Another side effect of cabin rentals East Texas is that you may just go home with the wild idea that you can survive and thrive in a smaller home.  When you spend some time in a tiny house – for a weekend or a month – you’ll discover that everything you need to be happy can be contained in a home that’s smaller than what you’re used to. Simplify by embracing small space living! (Or at least, small space vacationing.)

If the idea of simplifying your life this holiday season appeals to you, check out cabin rentals East Texas at Mill Creek Ranch Resort.  At Mill Creek Ranch Resort, we uncomplicate your holidays even more by offering an array of activities in a beautiful woodsy setting that will keep everyone busy and happy.  We’re also close to a variety of restaurants in Canton, TX so you don’t even have to cook if you don’t want to.  To make a reservation, call us at Mill Creek Ranch Resort at (877) 927-3439 and to take a look at what we have to offer, visit us online at www.millcreekranchresort.com.

Cabin Rentals In East Texas: Your East Texas Fall Couples Getaway

Cabin Rentals in East TexasIf you’re planning a fall getaway for you and your significant other, consider how much fun cabin rentals in East Texas can be.  No matter where in Texas you’re from – or where in the United States you’re from – East Texas is the perfect place for a cool-weather vacation for couples who need time away from the stress of everyday life.

East Texas Is The Perfect Destination

East Texas is loaded with natural beauty and, of all the areas in the state, it’s probably the most unexpected.  Everyone knows that Texas is bigger than most countries and that means that a one- or two-day road trip can take you from canyons to plains to beaches; but for many people, driving through the Piney Woods of East Texas is a jaw-dropping surprise.  Forests of tall pine trees aren’t what most people think of when they think of Texas; and cabin rentals in East Texas that are set in and among the pines make for a cozy, romantic setting, especially when there’s a chill in the air.

A Tiny Vacation House Is Made For Two

When you choose a tiny house for your East Texas cabin rental, you’ll not only get to snuggle that much closer to your loved one, you’ll also get a taste of what tiny house living is like.  The tiny house movement is a growing trend toward choosing the smallest space necessary for living.  It’s better for the environment and easier on the wallet to live or vacation in a house with limited square footage.  Whether or not you’ve already considered downsizing your home and trying tiny house living, a stay in a tiny vacation cabin may make you think twice about needing that three-car garage or walk-in closet.

There’s Fall Fun For Couples In Canton, Texas

As if staying in small house cabin rentals in East Texas wasn’t enough to bring you closer to your partner, when you choose a cottage rental near Canton, Texas, you’ll find lots of fun fall activities outside the cabin for the two of you to share.  The annual Festival of Trees will get you both in the mood for Christmas with a display of fun, unique Christmas trees decorated by local businesses, organizations and individuals to raise money for the Canton Chamber of Commerce.  Once you’re in the mood for the holidays, take in some shopping as you stroll hand-in-hand down Canton’s main street with its one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques.  If you really love shopping, you can time your vacation to coincide with First Monday Trade Days, the country’s largest flea market with over 7,000 vendors.  After a hectic day of shopping slow down with a romantic dinner for two.  Canton and the surrounding areas have a variety of restaurants to choose from, including the Four Winds Steakhouse, for steaks and seafood, and Dodge City Dinner Theater, for dinner and a movie.
