We strive to stand out from other East Texas resorts and offer guests many luxurious amenities and opportunities for adventure. A great way to spend your East Texas vacation is to take a day trip to the lake.

What To Bring to the East Texas Lakes

  1. Rain or shine, pack sun protection for a day outdoors. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends your sunscreen should be at least SPF 30, broadspectrum, and water resistant. Some sun protection people often overlook when packing is sun protection lip balm, a wide-brimmed hat, UPF clothing, and 100% UV protection sunglasses.
  2. Don’t forget to pack an insulated cooler filled with drinks and snacks. A fun day at the lake can work up a mighty appetite and thirst. For guests that are 21+, alcoholic beverages can be a fun addition to pack, but make sure you prioritize safety. Just like you wouldn’t drive a car while intoxicated, don’t navigate a boat.
  3. Packing towels and a dry change of clothes is a great idea. Even if you’re not planning on swimming, there’s always a chance you could get wet. If that happens, you’ll be glad that you came prepared.

Things to Do in East Texas

3 Fun Things to Do in East Texas This Weekend

Every autumn, first-time visitors to East Texas are pleasantly surprised by our fall foliage as our tall trees transform into a colorful meld of amber, marigold, and emerald. Here at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, we encourage our guests to hit the open road to spend an afternoon “leaf peeping.” But don’t forget to seek out the top-rated things to do in East Texas during your travels. Some of our favorite hidden gems in Texas lie within 25 minutes of Mill Creek Ranch, one of the only monthly RV parks in the region.

3 Kid-Friendly Things to Do in East Texas

We recently collected the best things to do in Canton, TX, so now it’s time to take a more in-depth look at our peaceful neighboring communities. All four of these things to do in East Texas are fun, inexpensive, and less than 30 minutes from Mill Creek Ranch Resort. So, without further ado, let’s start this list with a local favorite: Athens Scuba Park.

Athens Scuba Park – Athens, TX

Experts may not label East Texas as a “scuba diving haven,” but the folks at Athens Scuba Park would beg to differ. For just $60 per person, visitors can plunge into a warm, spring-fed lake on the edge of Athens, TX, to observe an array of underwater marvels. Over the years, the scuba park’s team has sunk a 60-foot jet, three sailboats, a bus, and many more “wrecks.” These artificial wrecks are quite healthy for our underwater friends as they provide a habitat for marine life. Unlike those scary deep-sea scuba diving trips, Athens’ depth sits at just 35 feet.

Things to Do in East Texas

East Texas Zoo and Gator Park – Grand Saline, TX

For those who’re hoping to observe an alligator feeding session and a wide variety of adorable animals, look no further than the East Texas Zoo and Gator Park. The zoo remains one of the most underrated East Texas attractions near Mill Creek Ranch Resort. Some of the most popular animals inside this extravaganza are the spotted African serval, goofy alpaca, adorable caracals, colorful chameleon, unique South African raccoons, majestic sika deer, lively vervet monkeys, and, of course, the friendly wallaroos. The main event, however, is the expansive Gator Park where nearly a dozen American alligators rule.

Edgewood Heritage Park Outdoor Museum – Edgewood, TX

Yet another one of our favorite things to do in East Texas is a trip to the nearby Edgewood Heritage Park Outdoor Museum. Over the past four-plus decades, this three-block museum has welcomed over 20 restored and furnished structures from the 1800s up to the 1920s. All of these structures (mostly homes) are reminiscent of rural Van Zandt County around the turn of the 20th century. Admission is just $5 per person! And don’t forget to plan a visit to the annual Edgewood Heritage Festival where you can observe blacksmiths, weavers, quilters, barbers, and many more craftspeople demonstrating their skills. The festival also features live music, an Old West shootout, bake sales, cookoffs, a dog show, and even an early appearance by Santa Claus.

Mill Creek Ranch Resort – Canton, TX

After a full day of fun at these nearby attractions, retreat to Mill Creek Ranch Resort for a barbecue, dip in our warm pool, stroll at dusk, and after-dark bonfire with family and friends. Build the Perfect Campfire in Canton, TX

As we officially turn the page to spring and say goodbye to our friendly Winter Texans, we turn our attention to campfire season. There’s no better time to roast marshmallows and share stories of the day’s adventures than the springtime as the weather’s just right! Mill Creek Ranch Resort is one of the only RV resorts in Texas to provide seemingly countless complimentary on-site activities, including private campfires! Spend your days swimming, fishing, and birdwatching before gathering for a tasty barbecue and a relaxing campfire among family, friends, and new acquaintances.

Campfire Essentials

rv resorts in texasThere are dozens of fire rings located throughout our peaceful resort, so you’ll never be more than a few steps away from a potential campfire. Campfire attire varies depending on the location. Canton typically sits in the 60s and 70s during the springtime, so shorts and a light hooded sweatshirt should do the trick. Before you can roast marshmallows, build s’mores, and stargaze, you have to bring along the campfire essentials. Here is a complete list of campfire essentials, ranging from split wood to a beverage of choice:

  • Split wood
  • Tinder
  • Lighter fluid
  • Camping chairs
  • Pokers
  • Stick lighter (or matches)
  • Lantern
  • S’mores (graham crackers, Hershey’s chocolate, and marshmallows)
  • Snacks (hot dogs, brats, buns, chips, etc.)
  • Condiments
  • Beverages
  • Wireless music player

Building the Perfect Fire

Most of our sizable, affordable RV park rentals include a fire ring, which is the perfect size for a late-night campfire. There are several methods of building the “perfect campfire.” Three of the most common types are teepee, log cabin, and lean-to. For rings and pits, teepee-style is the clear winner. Lay down a base of dry, split wood and top it with tinder. Construct a teepee-style structure on top of the base using approximately six pieces of wood. Sprinkle a small amount of lighter fluid into the interior of the teepee and set it ablaze with a match or stick lighter. Add a little extra tinder and lighter fluid sparingly if needed. Light wind or gentle blowing will speed up the process.

Award-Winning RV Resorts in Texas

Now that your campfire is healthily crackling, it’s time to sit back, relax, and open a beverage of choice. The kids can enjoy a hot chocolate or apple cider while the adults enjoy a craft beer from one of Tyler’s best breweries such as ETX and True Vine. Don’t forget to create a music playlist for your campfire, which should certainly include songs from Jason Isbell, Willie Nelson, Brandi Carlisle, Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson, Garth Brooks, and Chris Stapleton! Mill Creek Ranch Resort is one of the only award-winning RV resorts in Texas. We have the largest combination of RV sites, tiny house rentals, and charming cottages near the First Monday Trade Days in Canton. We are located less than an hour from Dallas. Book a well-deserved family getaway to our relaxing resort! Don’t let spring pass you by!

Family Vacations in Texas: Stress Free Planning Tips

family vacations texasFor better or worse, you probably remember taking family vacations as a child. Whether it was the most fun in the world or a perceived disaster, at the end of the day the result was, indeed, family togetherness and bonding. Now it’s your turn to take your family on a vacation, but what happened in that generation gap? Why does something so simple suddenly seem so stressful?

Here are a few common trip-planning stressors, and how to help ease your anxiety so that your kids will remember those times of family togetherness with fondness, too.

Is it worth it to upend my kid’s routines?

Going on vacation is disruptive to your child’s day-to-day routine. Do what you can to keep elements of their routine on the road (like storytime and other bedtime routines no matter where you are). It’s also helpful to remember that learning how to handle unfamiliar situations is important, as is having new experiences to create curiosity within the world. In other words, yes, it’s worth it.

Great – let’s upend their routine. Now how do I keep my kids from driving me nuts?

A long road trip is no time to remind your kids how little technology you had when you were their age. Entertainment is key. Make sure your kids have lots of movies and games loaded up on their tablets for travel and bring along books, games and toys to fill any downtime once you arrive at your destination. Make sure you have activities that work without wi-fi should you experience any disruption in service.

Give yourself plenty of time to plan.

If you have trip anxiety, chances are you’re not the type to go on a spontaneous weekend getaway. And you know what? That’s okay! Not everybody has to be spontaneous, and planning ahead doesn’t mean you won’t have fun. Make your lists, check them twice, then go out there and have a great time. If you still forget something, bear in mind there are very few things you can forget that won’t be available once you arrive.

Do something the kids will enjoy.

Part of keeping your kids entertained, happy, and appreciative of the family vacation is making sure to plan something they will actually enjoy doing. This means maybe wine country isn’t the best option. Choose a kid-friendly resort or a destination with family-friendly options.

Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton, TX has oodles of family-friendly activities to keep your kids engaged in both nature and family time. The beautiful forested area of Canton, TX is a great backdrop to help them appreciate nature and our resort has all the amenities for a fun weekend or week. For more information on stress-free family vacations in Texas at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, call (877) 927-3439.

Luxury RV Parks Texas

Amenities And Other Features To Look For In Luxury RV Parks

Luxury RV Parks TexasYour unforgettable fall or winter vacation is waiting in East Texas at Mill Creek Ranch Resort, one of the finest luxury RV parks in Texas and the southwest.  The Canton, Texas area is home to a variety of great attractions, not the least of which is the First Monday Trade Days market and that means that RVers from all over Texas and the south head to Canton all year round.  These experienced RV owners know that when it comes to finding a place to stop for a night, a week or longer, there is no substitute for a luxury park that takes care of its residents.

What To Watch Out For In A Sub-Standard RV Park

Once you own an RV, you’ll be on the lookout for every RV park in the state.  You’ll soon find out that there are more than you ever imagined; unfortunately, not all of these parks are reputable and are much less luxurious than you may expect.  There are some traits that most of these substandard parks have in common:

  • Bad management – This can cover just about anything from rude employees to neglected facilities.
  • Hidden fees and charges – Just about every RV park will tell you upfront how much it costs to rent a space from them, but they don’t always tell you about the extra money they charge for things like water, electric etc.
  • Crowded lots – RVs parked too close together, especially when your neighbors are loud, can make for a very tense vacation.
  • Too few amenities – Once you’ve parked your RV, you want to know that you’ll have access to things that will make your vacation fun, like swimming pools and WiFi.
What To Look For In A Luxury RV Park

Luxury RV parks also have some things in common that make them the best choice for RVers:

  • Beautiful facilities – Luxury RV parks are well-maintained, clean and are usually situated in scenic areas with lots of natural beauty.
  • Clean bathhouses and laundry facilities.
  • Clubhouses – Central meeting areas equipped with comfortable furniture, TVs and more, which are important for family get-togethers and rainy days.
  • Attentive staff and great management – Good customer service is what sets luxury parks apart from ordinary parks; friendly staff and management that cares are part of that.
  • Lots of amenities – Luxury RV parks are not only situated near outside attractions that are fun and interesting, they also offer on-site amenities, like swimming pools and other recreational activities, that make a vacation fun.

Cabins East Texas

Explore Options for Tiny Living Cabins in East Texas

Cabins East TexasSo is it really possible to achieve tiny house living in some of the cabins in East Texas? Absolutely!

Tiny house living is the latest housing movement that enables people to become homeowners on a much smaller scale; both in their budget and square footage.

Tiny homes are constructed on trailer format foundations. Generally, they range in size from a mere one hundred to several hundred square feet. These tiny living quarters are not built for seasonal living, rather they are constructed with all of the amenities of home, albeit with scaled down features that can fit into small spaces. Available in a wide range of forms and shapes and designed with complete kitchens and bathrooms, tiny houses offer all of the comforts you would expect to find in any home.

People who choose to live in tiny houses are looking for a way to become homeowners without the extra costs of property taxes. Some tiny home dwellers want to be able to purchase their own homes using smaller budget limitations. Still, others no longer need all of the space included in a typical home and are in search of a place to live without the burden of maintaining unused square footage.

By living in smaller spaces, it’s possible to have more time for travel and recreation. Instead of spending money on property taxes and house maintenance, funds can be used to travel to visit new and interesting places. Rather than wasting time on cleaning areas of a home that are unused, hours can be spent on recreational activities and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

If you’re looking to join the tiny house living movement, consider the Mill Creek Ranch Resort cabins in East Texas. Whether you’re looking to rent a room to try it out or to own your own, their tiny house cabins will provide you with the opportunity to lead the simple life while enjoying memorable recreational activities. At Mill Creek Ranch Resort, we’ll help you to simplify your living arrangements and offer you a wide variety of activities in a picturesque forest setting that will keep you, your family and your friends, perfectly content.

Featured on an episode of Tiny House Hunters which premiered Monday, September 12 on HGTV, Mill Creek Ranch Resort helped a young family find a tiny home with a cabin feel.

spring break canton tx

An East Texas Resort for Spring Break? Yes!

east texas resort for spring breakSpring break is right around the corner. If you’re hoping to get away, it’s not too late to book a family trip to an East Texas Resort. Spring break is the perfect time to recapture the slower pace and family closeness you shared over the winter holidays while enjoying the freshness that comes from spring weather as nature starts to wake up.

What can your family do outdoors?

  • Play disc-golf! It’s the perfect opportunity for the kids to learn some finesse from grandpa or mom. Ramp up the fun (and competitive) factor by having “closest-to-hole” prizes on certain holes. A prize bucket with candy provides the extra motivation to hone your flinging skills.
  • Take a nature walk. Spring is the perfect time to look at the daily progress trees make as their leaves unfold more each day. What a perfect opportunity to talk about turning over a new leaf, fresh starts, and the beauty of the natural world. Bonus: who can spot the most types of trees? Bigger bonus: who can spot the most bird nests?
  • Paddle boat races! If that’s not your speed, perhaps some paddle boat dawdling while you enjoy the water will do that trick? Either way, paddle boats are a great way to get on the lake. Bonus: you can introduce your family to life without electronics for a while!
  • Whether you’re a novice or experienced angler, fishing in a stocked pond is always a springtime pleasure.
  • Early spring evenings are often rather nippy; gather around a fire pit and make s’mores! Who can resist that warm, gooey, chocolatey goodness?
  • Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit! Whether you hit the gorgeous pool or relax in a hot tub, the water is always a great place to spend time with the family.

What can your family do indoors?

  • Board games and puzzles provide the perfect way to sit down and connect with your family during spring break. Whether you’re working on an intense game of chess or laughing at charades, your family can make memories and strengthen bonds from the comfort of your own cabin.
  • Take time to cook together. Does your family have a special recipe you’d love to pass down to your kids? Using your “extra” time on vacation to teach and feed your kids provides a lifetime of memories for them, and it’s also nice on the budget.
  • Color! Coloring books for all ages are the rage right now. They’re easy to transport and great to have on hand for the unexpected rainy day. Bonus: let everyone have the opportunity to DJ your coloring time and start learning to appreciate all the styles of music your family enjoys. You may find your tastes are more similar than you had thought.

East Texas might not be the obvious choice for spring break, but a few days at a cabin in the beauty of the piney woods could be the perfect way for your family to enjoy the beginning of a new season. The Mill Creek Resort Ranch offers your family all of the options mentioned, and many more, too! You won’t want to miss all the activities our events coordinator is cooking up–excursions, crafts, and more. Let Mill Creek Resort Ranch host your family for a spring break vacation filled with memories for a lifetime, all at an
