twister relief

Saturday, April 29th was a difficult day for many in east Texas. A series of 7 tornadoes hit the area, the worst being an EF-4 that lasted for 40 minutes, covering a 22 mile path in the Van Zandt County. The ensuing 48 or more hours without power deepened losses. Our hearts go out to those who lost life, or sustained damages to their health, home, or business.

But in the midst of disaster, there is hope. Our thanks go out to the many workers who helped get the power back on, and those working to clean up the debris and rebuild.

And you can help, too!

Volunteer

If you plan on working to help clean up, it’s important that you register your hours with the county. Registration is happening at the Van Zandt County Fairgrounds, on Highway 64 in Canton, and they can direct you to where the most help is needed. Sign-in is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Donate Money

Perhaps the easiest way to help is to donate money towards recovery efforts. The First State Bank Ben Wheeler has set up a relief fund account. Check payments should be made out to the “Van Zandt County Tornado Relief Fund,” and payments can be mailed to:
