Best Historical Church Sites To Visit In East Texas

If you appreciate old or modern churches, East Texas has lots to love. Here are some wonderful churches near Canton, TX.

First Baptist Church of Canton

While this church is still standing, it serves as a piece of Canton’s history. You can find this historical marker at the intersection of Athens Street and Peace Street. The marker was erected in 1971. The site has gone through multiple iterations, but it was the first organized church in the city. It first opened in 1871 and started holding Sunday school lessons in 1885.

First United Methodist Church of Canton

This is another important historical marker that ties to Canton’s history. The marker was erected in 2006 at South Buffalo Street and Mulberry Street.

Around 1852, some residents began hosting Methodist services in their homes. It wasn’t too long before the residents found their first pastor in 1856. However, during and following the American Civil War, church membership dropped. But, things improved enough that 1888 church members built their first sanctuary with funds raised by the Ladies Aid Society. The one-room sanctuary served as a meeting place until the late 1950s.

Little Hope Baptist Church

A historical marker for Little Hope Baptist Church is found outside of the city limits. The church was originally organized in 1893, and its first sanctuary was built a year later and then expanded in 1896. A second sanctuary was built in 1916, too, and a third church was also constructed in the 1950s.
